The Eider starts to form groups off the shores of the colony early in the spring, usually in the beginning of May. Around middle or even as early as at the beginning of May, the birds start moving up onto the shore and into the colony. The birds start nesting and males and femals start paring. After the female Eider has laid eggs, the male bird goes back out to sea, but the female bird sits on the eggs in the nest. It will have to go out to sea occasionally and leave the eggs in the nest. It plucks feathers off its chest to keep the eggs warm when it has to leave the nest.<\/p>\n

The incredible insulation properties of the down causes the eggs to stay warm even if the bird is away for quite some time.<\/p>\n

The Eiderdown is collected throughout the nesting period. When the female bird sits on the nest, it has to be approached carefully. The down is then collected, but only what the bird doesn't need. The birds are very gentle, but some individuals are more irritable than others. Sometimes the birds have plucked too much down for the nest, so it has begun to blow away in the wind, in case of which more down must be collected quickly. The down collected is coarsly cleaned when it is collected. After the ducklings have hatched from the eggs, eggshells must be picked from the down.<\/p>\n

The eggs start to hatch in the beginning of June.<\/p>\n

In a large colony things happen quickly and the eiderdown must be picked fast from nests which the birds have left to prevent it from blowing away in or raining down. Most birds will have left the colony in early July but individual birds can stay as long as the end of the month.<\/p>\n

Coarse cleaning of the eiderdown requires a lot of work which can last until the Fall. The eiderdown is cleaned to remove extraneous materials such as moss, grass, and soil. The down is also allowed to dry. It is then sent for further cleaning and feather picking.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Special machines are used for final cleaing. The raw down is heated (processed) for at least 8 hours at minimum sustained temperatures of 100 \u00b0C to kill any ectoparasites and diseases that may be carried by the feathers. In addition, every feather must be hand picked from the down, which is very tedious work. Once fully cleaned, the down is ready for inspection, then sale, either domestically or for export or it is used to make products such as duvets, pillows or other products.<\/p>\n

Nothing is mixed with the eider down. It is therefore a 100% organic natural product.<\/p>\n
